Role of the DGA
In Charged of preparing for the future and developing technologies and systems for the armed forces and the gendarmerie, the DGA is also aiming, as part of a socially responsible approach, to increase its contribution to security in several directions:
strengthening its areas of excellence relevant to security: NRBC, security of information systems, drone systems, expertise in vulnerability, etc.
entering into partnerships with security stakeholders
developing synergies and securing the involvement of non-defence users in defining and directing security research
ensuring effective coordination for technological and industrial aspects of interministerial preparation of national and European security research programmes
The DGA also:
develops the programmes required by the armed forces to fulfil their security missions: the Helios space observation system, SPATIONAV system and FREMM multipurpose frigates for the surveillance of sea approaches, the air operations command and control system (SCCOA) required for air security, the system to protect against CBRN threat , etc.
prepares future technologies and systems such as UAV, detection through walls, new sensors, etc.
has a high level of expertise and is regularly consulted by private and public bodies, for example as an expert witness,
acts as the technical certification authority for aircraft for the French civil aviation authority (DGAC), part of the Transport Ministry.
To fulfil these missions, the DGA was reorganised in 2005:
a new "force system" captures all “protection and safeguard” missions to provide for a coherent approach of theses in liaison with the armed forces staffs
security technologies department has been set up to coordinate the DGA’s security activities and develop synergies with all stakeholders in security.
