The VBCI (Véhicule Blindé de Combat d’Infanterie) is a program of infantery armoured fighting and command post vehicles. Taking its origins in the VBM modular armoured vehicle program, it is adapted to the new strategic context and an evolving threat, because of its upgrade ability. It will be airtransportable by the future A 400 M military transport aircraft.
With a combat weight of 25.6 t, it will, in 2006, begin to equip mechanised infantery platoons and the platoons directly supporting the Leclerc units for their transport, protection, fire power and support. It will eventually replace the 10P and PC AMX types of armoured vehicle in service in the french Army since the 1970s.
