Amphibious Troop Carriers (TCD in French, NATO designation LPD) are major components for the transportation of forces by sea. Operating within the framework of joint-service and multi-national operations, they most frequently transport force elements to be landed directly into the operational theatre through the use of existing port facilities, in zones controlled by friendly forces, or in amphibious landing operations which include helicopter transfer and beach landings onto undeveloped or poorly defended shores.
The Foudre and Siroco Amphibious Troop Carriers provide a large capacity for the transportation of troops, helicopters and landing craft (these are accommodated in a huge internal space - the ship’s dock). These Troop Carriers are also equipped with advanced medical facilities (operating theatres, serious burns treatment units, etc.) capable of carrying out advanced medical procedures.
