In order to meet the needs of the Future Combat Aircraft for the Air force, the Mirage 2000-5F programme was launched in 1993. It is not a question of new planes but of the Mirage 2000 DA being transformed into the Mirage 2000-5F. The main improvements concern the installation of the new RDY radar (multi mode and multi target), the positioning of 4 new carriage points under the fuselage of the aircraft intended to hold the new Mica missile. Note also that the cockpit has been completely reconsidered with a complete overhaul of the instrument panels and the appearance of new multi-function screens and the changeover to the HOTAS concept.
The Mirage 2000-5F has the task of air defence and air supremacy, with the possibility of air to air day and night multi target firing in all weather, alone and in a patrol. The mission may take place in coordination with allied patrols owing to NATO interoperability of the Mirage 2000-5F.
37 Mirage 2000-5F have been delivered between 1997 and 2000 in order to equip two squadrons from the Dijon air base. Entry into operational service of the Mirage 2000-5F weapons system was announced on 4th February 2000 by the Chief of Staff of the Air force.
