The MILAN light infantry anti-tank missile is a medium range second-generation weapon developed under Franco-German cooperation and manufactured by Euromissile (MBDA-France and LFK). Its ease of use and small size means that it can be used disembarked as well as from a range of vehicles such as the P4, the VBL and the VAB, the AMX 10 and VLRA in France. MILAN has a range of 2000 m and a day/night capability. It can neutralise the principal main battle tanks or armoured vehicles as well as fortifications.
The original version of MILAN entered service in 1974 and has been upgraded several times:
Addition of thermal sight (1985).
Introduction of warhead for composite armour (1985).
Introduction of tandem warhead for reactive armour along with an anti-jamming device (1994).
Including all versions, MILAN has now been delivered to forty-four countries (including three under licence).
MILAN has been exported to 43 nations throughout the world (including 4 under licence). Operationally, MILAN has been used in most of the conflicts over the past 20 years including the Iran/Iraq war, the Lebanon, the Falklands, Tchad, Afghanistan and the Gulf war (Desert Storm).
