The Magic 2 (or R550 MK2) air-to-air missile was developed by MBDA (F) (ex Matra BAe Dynamics France) and has been in service since 1986. It is a passive IR homing missile that succeeded Magic 1 (R550), and offers many improvements including increased manoeuvrability and acquisition range. Magic 2 enables the frontal attack envelope to be expanded. It may be fired without visual acquisition and its maximum range is about 15 km.
The Magic missile has been fitted to more than 15 types of fighter (from the F16 to MIG23) and has achieved many successes in export markets. More than 3600 Magic 2 have been manufactured and it is in service with more than 18 armed forces throughout the world.
Ultimately, the Magic 2 will be progressively replaced by the Mica IR.
