The Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS), called in France " Lance-Roquettes Multiple" (LRM), was launched in 1970 by the US. In 1979 Germany, France and the United Kingdom joined the program. Italy joined in 1982. The MLRS production in Europe started in 1989 and was completed in 1995.
MLRS is the main artillery system for operational forces. It contributes to tactical destruction or dislocation of targets.
LRM NG program (New Generation) is basically aimed to develop a new increased range precision rocket able to destroy light armoured targets, at long distance, with limited collateral damages.
The development phase of the Guided MLRS (GMLRS) rocket has started in September 1998, based on an MoU signed by France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom and the United-States. Aérospatiale Matra Missiles (AMM) is participating to prime contracting activities.
LRM NG program also encompasses European activities such as a Self Destruct Fuze (SDF) for the bomblet of the rocket and a Future Fire Control System program as an improvement of the launcher.
