Land-based but employed as air elements in the sea battle, the Atlantique-2, manufactured by SECBAT (Société Européenne de Construction des avions Bréguet Atlantic) is a long range maritime patrol and anti-submarine aircraft. Successor to the Atlantic-1 (ATL1) better known as the Breguet Atlantic, the Atlantique-2 (ATL2) entered service in the French Navy in 1990 with the primary roles of intelligence gathering over the high seas and the location and attack of enemy warships and submarines. It also participates in the projection of power. Its long endurance, wide radius of action and detection capabilities make it a vital tool for the maritime zone commander in the control of the sea areas under his responsibility.
It is also very well adapted to sea search roles and to anti-pollution operations and this justifies its participation in public service missions. It is also tasked with monitoring the Guyana Space Centre safety area.
The ATL2 fleet includes 28 aircraft, all operated by the French Navy.
