The AASM modular air-ground weapon, developed by Sagem, operates by guiding a conventional 250 kg bomb released from an aircraft. The weapon has a range of several tens of kilometers, with either decametric or metric accuracy. The decametric version is fitted with both inertial and GPS guidance. It will be delivered to the armed forces during 2007 and will provide all-weather firepower for the air-ground version of the Rafale (F2 standard). The metric version also carries an infrared imaging system to improve the accuracy of the strike in the final stages of guidance. This version will be delivered to the armed forces during 2008.
The AASM will provide the French armed forces with increased range and the capability to strike with decametric accuracy in all weathers. This is the first weapon of this type to be developed in Europe.
