The artillery is one of the key components of the battle field on the ground and since 1979 France has possessed nearly 270 self-propelled 155s (155AUF1). The present material consists of two main sub-assemblies :
an AMX 30 B chassis,
a turret equipped with a 155 mm gun (version AUF1) and inertial firing system for the AUF1T version.
It should be pointed out that the AUF1 (or AUF1T) turret is designed to be mounted on almost any tank chassis (AMX30, T72, T80, Léopard, Leclerc etc.).
The French Army’s present stock is undergoing a refit during the period 1999-2008 concerning the turret. This refit produces a considerable saving when compared with the procurement of new material.
